Here's what we used to make our cool rolled beeswax candles:
- Halloween Beeswax candle kit: This kit is super awesome, but you don't need a kit - you can always buy beeswax sheets, wick and halloween gems however it is most convenient for you.
- Small veggie cutters: These are optional, but we used them to make cook Halloween graphics on our candles
- Butter knife or something to cut the modeling wax.
Okay, now let's see how we made our rolled beeswax candles:
Step 1: First, we need to cut a sheet of beeswax into a piece that's 8 inches by 8 1/4 inches. If you have the kit we mentioned, you don't need to cut at all!
Step 2: Sometimes, it helps to make the beeswax a little softer. We did this by using a hair dryer and blowing warm air on the sheet for about 10 seconds. It makes it easier for kids to roll the beeswax -though you can do it without the blowdryer as well.
Step 3: Cut a piece of wick and leave about half an inch at the top. Put it at the edge of the candle and press it down firmly. This part might need some help from grown-ups because it needs to be pressed pretty hard -but it is doable. Again, if you have the kit, no need to cut the wick.
Step 4: Now it's time to roll the candles! You have to roll them gently and keep the pressure steady. At first, our candles weren't very straight, but we got better with practice.
Step 5: Keep rolling until you reach the end of the sheet, and then gently press the edge into the candle. But don't press too hard, or you might mess up the honeycomb pattern!
Step 6: The beeswax candles look nice as they are, but we wanted to make them even cooler! We used colorful modeling wax to add pictures to our candles. We used small veggie cutters to make shapes for Halloween.
Step 7: We pressed some Halloween gems into our candles to make them extra spooky. You can do this with little things you find at the store or that might already be in your Halloween bin. The kit comes with them if you opt for that. Simply press the Halloween decorations on firmly and they will stick tot he wax.
We had so much fun making these rolled beeswax candles. Which one is your favorite?
And remember, making rolled beeswax candles is a fun activity for both kids and grown-ups! We hope you try making them too! 😊
